Graphic video emerged on July 12 (Video 1) showing people in military uniforms throwing men over a cliff on a bank of the Tigris in Mosul’s Old City, and shooting them. The video’s description said that the soldiers were Iraqi forces and that the victims were accused of being IS fighters. Additional video (Videos 2) showed scenes from the same location.

The Iraqi military reported that it captured the city on July 10.

The men are wearing military uniforms consistent with Iraqi military uniforms (see photos here, here and here); however, their insignias cannot be made out. The men in the video can be heard accusing the detainees of being IS fighters.

These videos was shared by the Independent Network of Journalists in Iraq on their Facebook page. The version of Video 1 released by the network was the earliest version of the video made available on social media. Video 2 showed people in military uniforms abusing or killing alleged IS captives. Both videos could be geolocated to Mosul’s Old City.

Given that the two videos show fighters carrying out what appear as human rights violations, it is likely that the videos in question were submitted anonymously.

Videos 1 and 2 were later removed from the page. Additional videos (including Video 3) were also shared by the group in the subsequent 24 hours, showing similar scenes of men who appear to be Iraqi soldiers abusing alleged IS fighters.

Location:

The video can be confirmed as being shot near the Fifth Bridge in Mosul. See images below.

The image above was taken from Video 1.

The image above was taken from Google Maps (see here).

Date:

The video was shared on July 13, 2017. However, the caption said it was the second part of a video shared the day before.

A video was shared by an Iraqi activist group the day before, from the same location, saying it showed the first part of the incident. See here.

The Iraqi military claimed to have captured the city on July 10.
