IRAQI FORCES PERPETRATOR VIDEOS

The Iraqi government, backed by US-led coalition forces, launched an offensive to retake Mosul city from IS on October 16, 2016. The city was fully retaken on July 10, 2017.

Various social media accounts with links to the Iraqi police, military or militias taking part in the operation posted videos glorifying their actions. Examples include:

• Iraqi Federal Police
• Iraqi Ministry of Defence
• Al-Mawsleya
• Popular Mobalization Units
• Telafar Gate
• Imam Ali Brigade

Some videos released during the operation included imagery of victims of the fighting that, on occasion, dehumanized the opposition or glamorized violence. These videos were taken and shared with the intent of inspiring fear in the opposition.
