Using Video to Advocate for Parole, Clemency and Sentencing Mitigation

Legal Video Advocacy

Calling all filmmakers and editors: Collaborations between lawyers and filmmakers are a crucial part of legal advocacy videos. Are you interested in volunteering your time and/or equipment?

Overview

The United States puts more people in prison than any other country in the world. There are over 1.5 million people in U.S. state and federal prisons, or 2.3 million if you take into account local jails, juvenile correctional facilities, immigration detention centers, etc. This mass incarceration disproportionately impacts low-income individuals and people of color, resulting in detrimental impacts on families and communities for generations.

To help reduce this massive prison population and to promote human dignity and growth over punishment and retribution, WITNESS is supporting advocates, lawyers, and incarcerated individuals in using video for sentencing mitigation and to advocate for decarceration through clemency and parole.
